We met with a neurologist/movement specialist and another neurosurgeon today and it was their opinion that before Dad's cervical spine surgery can safely be performed, his dyskinesias from the Parkinsons disease need to be better controlled. Both Deep Brain Stimulation and pallidotomy were brought up and after some discussion it was the neurosurgeon's opinion that the pallidotomy would be the best option. Surgery is tentatively scheduled for March 9th and his pre-operative appointment will be on March 3rd.
After he recovers from the pallidotomy surgery, he will then have the cervical spine surgery that we already talked about. My parents are still considering all the potential risks and benefits from these surgeries and have several difficult decisions in front of them.
